Forming the Thesis Statement (for Literary Analysis essays*)
Format for the Thesis Statement:
T.A.G + Topic + 3 Subtopics
T = Title of Literary piece
A = Author of Literary piece
G = Genre of Literary piece (poem, short story, novel, movie, etc.)
Topic = The focus of the essay - What will it be about? What will be discussed in the essay?
Subtopics = The three areas or ideas you are trying to prove within your topic - What are the significant ideas in the piece? What subjects made the topic come aliveh?
~It does not matter how the components of the Thesis Statement are arranged, as long as all components are written in the statement.
Example Thesis Statement:
Author Genre Title Topic
In William Shakespeare's drama titled "Romeo and Juliet" the tragedy is intensified through the
subtopic subtopic subtopic
character's actions, their misunderstanding of situations, and the miscommunication that occurs
throughout the play.
Note: For an average high school essay (2-6 pages), the Thesis should be one sentence only. For longer essays (8 or more pages) the Thesis should be two or three sentences.
