Writing Paragraphs (for the Literary Analysis Essay)
The simple paragraph structure for the essay is supplied on the "Formats for Essays" page. This paragragh format is the work of Jane Schaffer and her writing strategy for reluctant and struggling writers. The abbreviations on the format are as follows:
CD = Concrete Detail; Quote, fact,
statistic you are trying to prove
CM = Commentary; the explanation of the
CD or general information on the topic
TS = Topic sentence; the topic to be
discussed in the paragraph
CS = Concluding sentence; generally restates
the TS
When using this format, it is very important that the outline in done. Since the CDs in the format are the quotes that have been chosen, they can be plugged into the structure with an introductory phrase (i.e. "The author says," or "The story expresses,") and then the CMs can be written. The TSs for each paragraph are the topics that are written in the Thesis Statement which means THREE sentences have already been written! How easy can it get! The structure is SUPER EASY - do not stress over it!
